- Symptoms of the Economy
I grew up in Flint, MI a midsized city 45 minutes north of Detroit with a predominately African-American population. Poverty runs rampant as General Motors continues to remove jobs. In a statement to ABC12 news the Governor of Michigan Jennifer Granholm stated that Flint’s current unemployment rate is nearly 22%. There is no wonder that this year Flint has surpassed its all time murder rate as well. The previous all-time high was established back in 1986 during the reign of Ronald Regan and his economy killing “Reganomics.” This period in history was devastating to Flint which was documented on film in 1989 by Michael Moore in his historic documentary “Roger & Me”, which chronicled Flint’s economic collapse at the hands of General Motors corporate greed. If you’ve had the opportunity to view this film and were not from Flint, you may doubt its authenticity. It is shrouded with several evictions of homeowners and scenes of a dilapidated city that has the appearance of a Hollywood movie lot. The fact remains that these scenes were true and now those exact same scenes are being played out all over the city of Flint again.
Deserted and Dilapidated
In recent months, Flint has been gaining national press that unfortunately reflects upon the city in the most negative way. Forbes Magazine recently named Flint one of America’s “Fastest Dying Cities”. The report stated that 17,221 people have migrated from the city since 2000. This migration should have created job openings for the unemployed by the sheer number of people who left the city, however the opposite happened. The same interview that was granted to ABC12 by Governor Jennifer Granholm revealed that the current unemployment rate in the state of Michigan stands at 12% while the unemployment rate in Flint is a whopping 22%. This number of course would probably drastically increase if we were able to drill down even further on the data and single out African-American males. Flint has also made another distinguished list that it seems to have been apart of since the 80’s as well the “Most Dangerous City” list. This year Flint once again made the top five placing fourth after Detroit. There are many issues that need to be addressed in Flint such as the unemployment rate, drug trade, and education to state a few, but the most important for the citizens of Flint, Michigan is for its citizens to be able to find gainful employment.

We have heard many of the nonsensical statements from the extreme right, but we at H.I.P feel this one takes it a little too far. Why is it that these same individuals did not react the same way when the NFL suspended the Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger over his second rape investigation??? We are just asking the same questions the people are asking. Click the below link:
