Once again it seems that funds pledge by the U.S. have failed to be delivered to those in need.  Reminiscent of the Red Cross funds that were promised to the victims of “Hurricane Katrina” billions of pledged U.S. dollars have somehow vanished just as soon as they were offered.  The U.S. seems to be developing a sort of negative image when it comes to distributing the aid that we have pledged to give.  The funny thing is that this aid only seems to be delayed when it involves areas that hold no obvious value to our government.  A prime example would be the quick response to the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.  Many Nations as well as private citizens donated funds for those relief efforts and funds were distributed at a faster rate than they are currently being distributed to Haiti.  A full year has passed and we still see images that resemble a scene similar to that of the same week the quake initially took place.  A CBC news article stated the following in regards to Haiti,

“The greatest lapse was the failure to ensure firm and transparent governance, and public order backed by law.

This was a country that needed to be resurrected from a state of prostration comparable to rubble-strewn Germany or Japan after the Second World War. (Though even these bombed-out powers had more to fall back on in terms of infrastructure and economic potential.)

There were even some calls to make Haiti a UN protectorate, to ensure a working state functioned while a large-scale peacekeeping mission was established to provide security and aid.”

Haiti one year later

These statements along with the fact that a huge bottleneck of pledged international aid that totaled nearly $6 billion have yet to reach its benefactor.  Many excuses have been given as to why these funds have not made there way to the ravaged country, but we must not forget the neglect Haiti has had to bear since the nation established its independence in 1804.  Some may say that the centuries of neglect stem from the resentment of a slave state winning independence.  Some may say it is because of corrupt government officials.  What ever the case maybe the incessant neglect and outright malevolence has to stop.  The world community has to set all grudges aside and look at this from a humanistic standpoint.  We as a world community cannot afford to let our fellow-man suffer when others have so much.
